Wurundjeri

The River

About

This scene tells the story of the Birrarung, the river of mists and shadows. For the Wurundjeri, the Birrarung is a hugely important part of the life of People and Country. A source of sustenance and cultural vitality, a crossing place to neighbouring Country, a home to fish, eels and aquatic flora. The Birrarung is a living entity that needs to be protected, respected and cared for.

In this scene we bring you to the waters edge on theĀ banks of Birrarung Marr and invite you to learn about Birrarung from the perspective of the eel.

The Wurundjeri People (Woi wurrung language group) are the recognised Traditional Custodians of a large Cultural estate that includes urban, rural lands and waterways. Wurundjeri Country includes the inner city of Melbourne extending North of the Great Dividing Range, east to Mount Baw Baw, South to Mordialloc Creek and West to the Werribee River. https://www.wurundjeri.com.au/
