As taught to us by the Wunndjeri Woi People, Marngrook was played way different to Aussie Rules football. The ball was made from Possum skins and the fella who kicks the ball the highest is the winner for the day. He then proudly gets to bury the ball until the next game is played.
Long before the crowds, and before the MCG televised game we know as the AFL, the site where the MCG is located was a ceremonial ground. A place for local tribes to meet and participate in Men’s business.
The Wurundjeri People (Woi wurrung language group) are the recognised Traditional Custodians of a large cultural estate that includes urban, rural lands and waterways. Wurundjeri Country includes the inner city of Melbourne extending North of the Great Dividing Range, east to Mount Baw Baw, South to Mordialloc Creek and West to the Werribee River.
