The Eels

The Eel is an important animal for the People of the Bunurong Nation. The Eel lives and travels the banks of Birrarung and beyond, travelling huge distances from Birrarung all the way North to the Coral Sea. The Eel is healing, providing food and medicine through its meat, oil and connection to Culture. Eels were caught in specially woven traps, and ovens were built in hollowed trees we call them ‘smoking trees’.
